A qualitative framing analysis of how firearm manufacturers and related bodies communicate to the public on gun-related harms and solutions.
There is a growing understanding that the producers and sellers of harmful products directly and indirectly affect population health and policy, including through seeking to influence public understanding about the nature of harms and their solutions. However, the firearm industry and related organisations have not to date been the subject of this type of enquiry. This study sought to address this evidential gap through examining the ways in which the firearm industry and industry-associated organisations frame firearms, firearm-related harms and possible solutions to gun violence. ⋯ The firearm industry and firearm industry-funded organisations use framings about the safety and role of guns, evidence on associated harms and solutions that align with the industry's business interests, consistent with evidence on other harmful product manufacturers. This study identified framing strategies employed by the firearm industry and related organisations. These included attempts to undermine evidence, linking regulation to a dystopian future, minimising some of the most common harms, placing the responsibility for harms on individuals, and attempting to foster a heightened sense of risk to personal safety.

Long-term effects of the interruption of the Dutch breast cancer screening program due to COVID-19: A modelling study.
Due to COVID-19, the Dutch breast cancer screening program was interrupted for three months with uncertain long-term effects. The aim of this study was to estimate the long-term impact of this interruption on delay in detection, tumour size of screen-detected breast cancers, and interval cancer rate. After validation, the micro-simulation model SiMRiSc was used to calculate the effects of interruption of the breast cancer screening program for three months and for hypothetical interruptions of six and twelve months. ⋯ A 19% increase in interval cancer rate was found between last screening before and first screening after interruption compared to no interruption. Hypothetical interruptions of six and twelve months resulted in larger increases in interval cancer rate of 38% and 78% between last screening before and first screening after interruption, respectively, and an increase in middle-sized tumours in first screening after interruption of 26% and 47%, respectively. In conclusion, the interruption of the Dutch screening program is not expected to result in a long-term delay in detection or clinically relevant change in tumour size of screen-detected cancers, but only affects the interval cancer rate between last screening before and first screening after interruption.

Colorectal cancer screening in a safety-net health system: The intersectional impact of race, ethnicity, language, and mental health.
Though rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening continue to improve with increased advocacy and awareness, there are numerous disparities that continue to be defined within different health systems and populations. We aimed to define associations between patients' socio-demographic characteristics and CRC screening in a well-resourced safety-net health system. A retrospective review was performed from 2018 to 2019 of patients between 50 and 75-years-old who had a primary care visit within the last two years. ⋯ In multivariable analysis, most other races (Black, Asian, and Hispanic), ethnicities, and languages had significantly higher odds of screening, ranging from 20% to 55% higher, when White, North American/European, English-speakers are used as reference. In a well-resourced safety-net health system, patients who were non-White, non-North American/European, and non-English-speaking, had higher odds of CRC screening. This data from a unique health system may better guide screening outreach and implementation strategies in historically under-resourced communities, leading to strategies for equitable colorectal cancer screening.

From evidence to implementation of lifestyle behaviour in cancer prevention and control: A Preventive Medicine Golden Jubilee Commentary.
Preventive interventions targeting tobacco, alcohol, healthy diets and physical activity are key strategies to tackle the most pressing health challenges in modern society. A major gap remains in how to translate research evidence into population-level behaviour change to reduce the disease burden. We use the case for the role of physical activity-related behaviour and cancer to illustrate the iterative, multidirectional, and transdisciplinary nature of translational research. ⋯ We provide the rationale for combining systems, causal and design thinking to develop interventions that can be implemented for this type of behaviour change. The proposed model is iterative, multidirectional and transdisciplinary. We identify major knowledge gaps in epidemiology and science of behaviour change on physical activity and cancer control and propose approaches to suggest priorities for future research.

Electronic cigarette use as an aid to quit smoking: Evidence from PASSI survey, 2014-2021.
This paper updates a previous cross-sectional study on the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as an aid to quit smoking. In the 2014-2021 PASSI survey, the ongoing Italian behavioural risk factor surveillance system, on a total of 239,812 subjects representative of the Italian adult population respondents who smoked and made at least one quit attempt in the previous 12 months (i.e., 19,234 subjects) were categorized into four groups according to the method used in their most recent quit attempt: no aid, e-cigarettes, standard pharmacological support (medications) and/or smoking cessation services (SCSs), other unspecified methods. The primary outcome was self-reported abstinence for a period ≥6 months. ⋯ No significant difference in abstinence was observed for those reporting no aid compared with e-cigarette users (adjusted Prevalence Ratio [aPR] = 0.93; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.79-1.10). Those using medications/SCSs were significantly more likely to report abstinence than e-cigarette users (aPR = 1.35; 95% CI = 1.01-1.81). E-cigarettes as consumer products are not associated with higher quitting rates than those recorded using no aid, therefore there is no health benefit for allowing them to be marketed to smokers.
