Intussusception is the most common cause of abdominal emergency in early childhood. The majority of cases are ileocolic type of intussusception. Only few reports concerning small bowel intussusception have been reported. ⋯ The high percentage of patients with small bowel intussusception observed may relate to increased use of abdominal ultrasound in children presenting with abdominal pain and improvements in resolution and quality of the images. Small bowel intussusceptions in our series were in the majority of cases short-segmented, self-limited and without a lead point. In comparison to patients with ileocolic intussusception the presenting symptoms of small bowel intussusception are less acute.

Case Reports Comparative Study[Guillain-Barré syndrome as a rare cause of acute respiratory insufficiency].
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory demyelinating disease of peripheral nerves. Antibodies acting against antigens on the myelin or the axons seem to play a causative role. In up to 80 % the onset of GBS follows an antecedent respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. ⋯ IVIG and PP therapy are equally effective in GBS. In contrast corticosteroids are not of benefit. Prognosis of childhood GBS is good. Only 4 % of affected children demonstrate persistent muscular weakness. The long interval between admission and diagnosis in the reported case emphasized the importance of neurological examination especially in sedated patients.

Neonatal arterial hypertension is rare with an incidence between 0.2 - 3 %. Clinical presentation varies widely and is in some cases dramatic. ⋯ Diagnosis and treatment of neonatal hypertension are discussed with respect to the proposed case. After exclusion of other causes we conclude that a perinatal microangiopathic event may have lead to the renal lesions with malignant renovascular hypertension.

The incidence of hearing impairment after successful treatment of neuroblastoma.
Platinum compound based chemotherapy has contributed to improved survival rates in neuroblastoma patients. We studied the association of hearing loss with the use of platinum based drugs. ⋯ One fourth of high risk neuroblastoma survivors suffer from treatment induced hearing impairments. The substitution of cisplatin with carboplatin was not associated with an increased rate of tumor recurrences.

Comparative Study[Unrelated donor stem cell transplantation in children: low toxicity using a GvHD-prophylaxis regimen with CSA, MTX, metronidazole,iv-immunoglobulin and ATG].
Unrelated donor (UD) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is accepted as a therapy for leukaemic diseases and varying inborn diseases if a suitable related donor cannot be found. The goal of immunosuppressive therapy with UD-HSCT is an effective prevention of graft-versus-host-disease (GvHD) on one hand. On the other hand an optimal balance with immunocompetence of the transplanted bone marrow is desirable in order to prevent graft failure, infection and, in the case of leukaemic diseases, potentially control the underlying disease. ⋯ UD-HSCT in children is an effective and safe therapy. A GvHD-prophylaxis regimen combining the standard immunosuppressive agents CSA and MTX with ivIg, metronidazole and serotherapy using ATG may result in a low incidence of severe GvHD-complications and low TRM rate without increase in relapse rates.
