This study explored communication between pharmacists and patients through application of the Calgary-Cambridge guide [1] to appointment-based pharmacist-patient consultations and considers use of the guide in pharmacy education. ⋯ Pharmacists may need more training to improve the use of specific communication skills including how to conduct a patient-centred consultation. The Calgary-Cambridge guide is well aligned with many aspects of pharmacist-patient consultations and could help pharmacists to improve their consultation skills.

To explore how experienced clinicians from wide ranging specialities deliver bad news, and to investigate the relationship between physician characteristics and patient centredness. ⋯ It is possible to observe breaking bad news encounters by video-recording interactions between clinicians and simulated patients. Future training programmes should focus on increasing patient-centred behaviours which include actively involving patients in the consultation, initiating psychosocial discussion, and providing patients with opportunities to ask questions.

Assistance for patients faced with medical decisions has largely focussed on the clarification of information and personal values. Our aim is to draw on the decision research describing the role of emotion in combination with health behaviour models to provide a framework for conceptualizing patient decisions. ⋯ The framework provides a way for practitioners and researchers to frame thinking about a patient medical decision in order to assist the patient in clarifying decisional priorities.

Communication skills instruction: an analysis of self, peer-group, student instructors and faculty assessment.
To explore the correlation of student and faculty assessments of, second-year dental students' (D2s) communicative skills during simulated patient interviews. ⋯ Peer, student instructor and faculty assessments of dental students' communicative skills are not necessarily interchangeable but may offer uniquely different and valuable feedback to students.
