The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between changes in lower limb muscle mass and energy intake during the acute phase in older hemiplegic inpatients with stroke. ⋯ Energy intake could affect ΔFMT on the non-paralysis side in older stroke inpatients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relevance of ultrasonography training by non-experts carrying out quadriceps muscle mass assessment. ⋯ Measurements at the 10-cm landmark are more difficult to acquire, especially in the obese. Intensive training for non-expert examiners is mandatory.

Despite being secreted exclusively by adipocytes, circulating adiponectin (ApN) is negatively associated with obesity. Moreover, obesity is traditionally viewed as leading to increased bone mass and density. Therefore, ApN may play a biological role in regulating fat and bone metabolism. The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between ApN, measures of obesity, and bone mineral density (BMD) in healthy adults living in Singapore. ⋯ Our results suggest that ApN, an adipocyte-derived hormone, may affect bone metabolism, which may be mediated by sex hormones.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can exert detrimental effects in the lower digestive tract. The aim of this study was to examine the protective effects of a combination of the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum BB536 (Bifidobacterium) with the prebiotic lactoferrin in a rat model of diclofenac-induced enteropathy. ⋯ Diclofenac induced ileal mucosal lesions by activation of inflammatory and pro-oxidant mechanisms. These detrimental actions were prevented by the combination of lactoferrin with Bifidobacterium likely through the modulation of TLR-2/-4/NF-κB proinflammatory pathways.

Sepsis is a severe organic dysfunction caused by an infection that affects the normal regulation of several organ systems, including the central nervous system. Inflammation and oxidative stress play crucial roles in the development of brain dysfunction in sepsis. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a fish oil (FO)-55-enriched lipid emulsion as an important anti-inflammatory compound on brain dysfunction in septic rats. ⋯ FO diminishes the negative effect of polymicrobial sepsis in the rat brain by reducing inflammatory and oxidative stress markers.
