Dehydration and loss of appetite: Key nutrition features in older people receiving home health care.
The aim was to describe a population of older people in home health care based on what is probably a novel theoretical model, previously published, and to analyze longitudinal changes in different dimensions of nutritional status. ⋯ Most participants had poor nutritional status. Dehydration and reduced appetite were important indicators of worsening nutritional and overall status and mortality.

This study investigated how specific nutrition interventions were implemented at four US hospitals, compared rates of malnutrition diagnosis and assessment between physicians and registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), and examined how these differences affected the nutrition intervention received during patients' hospital stay. ⋯ The high level of agreement on assessment and malnutrition diagnosis suggests positive levels of malnutrition care coordination at the study hospitals. However, significant room for improvement exists in providing interventions to inpatients diagnosed with malnourishment. Differences in interventions may reflect dissimilar approaches commonly used by different practitioners and should be a topic of future study.

Short bowel syndrome with chronic intestinal failure (SBS-CIF) is a rare disease leading to a markedly decreased absorption of fluids and nutrients. Intestinal adaptation in patients with SBS-CIF who are treated with home parenteral nutrition is a natural repair process activated by increased secretions of glucagon-like peptide-2, inducing intestinal trophism, nutrient transport, and lowering gastrointestinal motility. Teduglutide (TED), a glucagon-like peptide-2 analog, offers a new, effective therapeutic alternative to boost intestinal adaptation. ⋯ Infective causes of diarrhea were ruled out in both patients. In conclusion, our experience shows that even after long-term treatment, the iatrogenic hyperadaptation process obtained with TED results is a temporary, drug-dependent process and vanishes with the suspension of therapy. These clinical cases suggest that in patients with SBS-CIF receiving TED, this treatment must be administered lifelong.

A healthy diet is associated with reduced risk for premature death; however, data on the association between food expenditure and life expectancy are scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the association of expenditure on food groups with life expectancy in men and women. ⋯ These findings may inform a nutritional measure against premature death and stagnation of increase in life expectancy.

Dietary intake of vegetables, fruit, and antioxidants and risk of ulcerative colitis: A case-control study in Japan.
Oxidative stress is considered one of the etiologic factors involved in ulcerative colitis (UC), yet there is limited epidemiologic information regarding the relationship between antioxidant intake and the risk of UC. The aim of the present case-control study in Japan was to examine the association between intake of green and yellow vegetables, other vegetables, fruit, vitamin C, vitamin E, retinol, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and cryptoxanthin and UC risk. ⋯ Intake of other vegetables, vitamin C, and retinol was inversely associated with UC risk.
