The Veterans Health Administration is the largest integrated health care system fully funded through the US government; however, compliance with government dietary recommendations within Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals is not well known. The aim of this study was to determine which foods are available at VA hospitals and whether these foods comply with government recommendations. ⋯ All VA Hospitals contain vending machines providing a majority of soda, candy, and junk foods that directly conflict with healthy food choice recommendations from US governing health bodies. Few sources meeting US dietary guidelines are available in vending machines at these government-run facilities, which serve as poor examples for patients who are attempting to follow a healthy diet.

The brain is essential in regulating intake of food and beverages by balancing energy homeostasis, which is regulated by the hypothalamus, with reward perception, which is regulated by the ventral tegmental area (VTA). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ingestion of glucose, fructose, sucrose, and sucralose (a non-caloric artificial sweetener) on the magnitude and trajectory of the hypothalamic and the VTA blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) responses. ⋯ Glucose induces a deactivation in the hypothalamus immediately after ingestion and continued over the next 12 min, which is correlated with satiety signaling by the brain. Fructose and sucrose are both associated with a delayed and lesser response from the hypothalamus, likely because the sugars first have to be metabolized by the body. Sucralose leads to the smallest and most transient decrease in BOLD in the hypothalamus and leads to a similar response as plain water in the VTA, which indicates that sucralose might not have a similar satiating effect on the brain as the natural sugars.

Providing home enteral nutrition (HEN) might prevent further deterioration of nutritional status and reduce complication risk after very invasive abdominal surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of HEN after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). ⋯ HEN is safe and may reduce postdischarge morbidity and improve nutritional status after PD.

Differential distribution of fats can vary among ethnic groups and thus have varying effects on metabolic risk. Measuring metabolic risk of individuals using simple anthropometric measurements is essential to replace current invasive methods of obtaining blood samples. Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) has been advocated as the best simple anthropometric measurement, but, because of the high visceral fat of Asians, there has been speculation as to the possibility of using only waist circumference (WC) to measure metabolic risk. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of WC and WHtR in terms of their association with measures of obesity and metabolic risk factors (e.g., homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, low-density lipoprotein, triacylglycerol, and ratio of triacylglycerol to high-density lipoprotein) and to obtain an optimal cutoff value for one anthropometric measurement. ⋯ It is suggested that WC is a simpler anthropometric measurement that has strong association with an individual's metabolic risk level.

We aimed to analyze the effect of a protein-deficient diet on mucosal and systemic immunity during a Trichinella spiralis infection. ⋯ Protein deficiency affects the mucosal and systemic immune response to Trichinella spiralis and delays the expulsion and increases the fecundity index score of AW, which leads to a higher parasite burden in the muscles.
