Comparative Study
[Depression, anxiety and stress scales : DASS-A screening procedure not only for pain patients].
The assessment of mental distress is a central aspect in pain research and treatment. Particularly for depression the comorbidity with pain poses methodological and conceptual challenges. This study examined the psychometric properties of the short version of the depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS), used in both pain research and treatment and constructed to overcome the particular problems by omitting somatic items and concentrating on the psychological core aspects of depression, anxiety and stress. ⋯ The DASS is a reliable questionnaire, free to use and brief to administer; therefore, it is an alternative to the previously used instruments for the screening of depression. Furthermore, the subscale stress measures irritability and tension, which are important aspects of pain experience but underused in assessment procedures for the diagnosis and treatment evaluation of patients with pain.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
[Development and content of the behavioral therapy module of the MiSpEx intervention : Randomized, controlled trial on chronic nonspecific low back pain].
Back pain is a complex phenomenon that goes beyond a simple medical diagnosis. The aetiology and chronification of back pain can be best described as an interaction between biological, psychological, and social processes. However, to date, multimodal prevention and intervention programs for back pain that target all three aetiological factors have demonstrated limited effectiveness. ⋯ To this end, the biological elements of neuromuscular adaptation is supplemented with cognitive behavioral and psychophysiological techniques in an intervention that can be followed at home as well as in clinics, and that is suitable for all grades of pain. The efficacy of this intervention will be tested in a multicentric randomized controlled longitudinal trial (n = 714) at five time points over a period of 6 months. Here we will describe the development and the content of this new intervention.

Case Reports Comparative Study
[Topical ambroxol for the treatment of neuropathic pain : A first clinical observation. German version].
Neuropathic pain is difficult to treat and available options are frequently not sufficient. The expectorant ambroxol also works as a strong local anesthetic and blocks sodium channels about 40 times more potently than lidocaine. Ambroxol preferentially inhibits the channel subtype Nav 1.8, which is expressed particularly in nociceptive C fibers. Due to the low toxicity, topical ambroxol seemed to represent a reasonable therapeutic attempt for treatment of neuropathic pain resistant to other standard options. ⋯ Ambroxol acts as a strong local anesthetic and preferentially inhibits the nociceptive-relevant sodium channel subtype Nav 1.8. For the first time, we report relevant pain reduction following topical Ambroxol 20% cream in patients with neuropathic pain. Regarding the advantageous profile with rare side effects, the clinical benefit for pain patients should be further investigated.
