No neurochemical evidence of brain injury after blast overpressure by repeated explosions or firing heavy weapons.
Psychiatric and neurological symptoms are common among soldiers exposed to blast without suffering a direct head injury. It is not known whether such symptoms are direct consequences of blast overpressure. ⋯ Repeated exposure to high-impact blast does not result in any neurochemical evidence of brain damage. These findings are of importance for soldiers regularly exposed to high-impact blast when firing artillery shells or other types of heavy weapons.

Total tau and S100b proteins in different types of multiple sclerosis and during immunosuppressive treatment with mitoxantrone.
Brain-specific proteins are biochemical markers of neurodegeneration. The aim of this study was to estimate the role of biomarkers in neuronal and glial damage as a potent marker of efficiency of immunosuppressive treatment. ⋯ CSF levels of tTau and S100b are elevated in patients with MS and can reflect an axonal and glial pathology. Measurement of serum concentrations of S100b may be useful for monitoring immunosuppressive therapy and may support clinical assessment. In contrast, tTau concentration did not prove to be a useful marker of mitoxantrone therapy.

Long-term functional outcome and health status of patients with critical illness polyneuromyopathy.
The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term functional outcome and health status of patients with critical illness polyneuromyopathy (CIPNM). ⋯ ICU patients with CIPNM treated in a neuro-rehabilitation setting resulted in a good functional outcome. Despite complete recovery, patients with CIPNM experienced difficulties in health status.

Evaluation of fatigue in Parkinson's disease using the Brazilian version of Parkinson's Fatigue Scale.
Fatigue is common in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, factors associated with fatigue in PD are still controversial. This study aimed to translate the Parkinson's Fatigue Scale (PFS) into Brazilian-Portuguese, to test its psychometric properties, and to assess the severity of fatigue in PD as well as its relation to demographic and clinical features, depression, anxiety, excessive daytime sleepiness and cognitive performance. ⋯ Fatigue is a common non-motor symptom in PD and seems to be associated with female gender, dysthymia, severity of depression and daily somnolence.

Efficacy and safety of intravenous lacosamide in refractory nonconvulsive status epilepticus.
Lacosamide (LCM) is a novel antiepileptic drug (AED) recently approved as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults. LCM is available in oral and intravenous formulations, has linear pharmacokinetics and a unique mechanism of action. ⋯ Intravenous LCM may be safe and efficacious as an add-on AED for the treatment of NCSE when standard therapy fails.
