Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Treatment with acetaminophen/paracetamol or ibuprofen alleviates post-dose symptoms related to intravenous infusion with zoledronic acid 5 mg.
Patients treated with intravenous zoledronic acid 5 mg for osteoporosis may experience post-dose influenza-like symptoms. Oral acetaminophen/paracetamol or ibuprofen administered 4 h post-infusion reduced the proportion of patients with increased oral temperature and worsening post-infusion symptom scores vs. placebo, thus providing an effective strategy for the treatment of such symptoms. ⋯ Oral acetaminophen/paracetamol or ibuprofen effectively managed the transient influenza-like symptoms associated with zoledronic acid 5 mg.

Predicting EQ-5D-US and SF-6D societal health state values from the Osteoporosis Assessment Questionnaire.
Linear regression was applied to data from 275 persons with osteoporosis-related fracture to estimate EQ-5D-US and SF-6D health state values from the Osteoporosis Assessment Questionnaire. The models explained 56% and 58% of the variance in scores, respectively, and root mean square error values (0.096 and 0.085) indicated adequate prediction for use when actual values are unavailable. ⋯ Two models were developed to estimate EQ-5D-US and SF-6D health state values from OPAQ and demonstrated adequate prediction for use when actual values are not available.

QCT-based finite element models predict human vertebral strength in vitro significantly better than simulated DEXA.
While dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is considered the gold standard to evaluate fracture risk in vivo, in the present study, the quantitative computed tomography (QCT)-based finite element modeling has been found to provide a quantitative and significantly improved prediction of vertebral strength in vitro. This technique might be used in vivo considering however the much larger doses of radiation needed for QCT. ⋯ The QCT-based hFE method provides a quantitative and significantly improved prediction of vertebral strength in vitro when compared to simulated DXA. This superior predictive power needs to be verified for loading conditions that simulate even more the in vivo case for human vertebrae.

Subchondral trabecular bone structure was analyzed in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients using 3-T MRI to investigate structural features of subchondral trabecular bone of knee OA. With OA progression, osteoporotic changes were observed in the lateral joint, showing a higher correlation than sclerotic changes in the medial joint. ⋯ To more sensitively detect OA changes in subchondral trabecular bone structure, a focus on osteoporotic changes in the lateral joint and the medial-lateral ratio would be useful. Detectability of early OA remains unknown, but based on a strong correlation with the degree of OA progression, trabecular structural analysis of subchondral bone may be a useful parameter to evaluate OA severity and evaluate treatment.
