Review[Innovations in continuing/permanent education methods for the intensive care nurses].
Intensive care nursing is carried out in a dynamic environment characterized by the continuous incorporation of new technologies, approaches to care and a request for safety, participation and transparency by the public. Continuing/permanent intensive care nursing training in the acquisition of new competencies is key in this setting. ⋯ At the same time research should be done on which attitudes, competences, and knowledge are necessary to increase their intellectual knowledge. The core characteristics of ICU and its nursing should allow a deep change in their approach to continuing/permanent nursing education.

Observational Study[Analysis of adverse events associated with interhospital transfer of critically ill patients. Safety checklist].
Mobilization entails a risk for critically ill patients. It is therefore important to design and apply the tools to detect any safety lapses and to improve the quality of patient healthcare. ⋯ Before each hospital transfer, a risk-benefit assessment is recommended in order to avoid potential alterations in the patient's pathophysiologic condition. Both the protocol and the safety checklist are key to detect underlying factors and improve security during interhospital transfers.

Restrictive visiting hours continue to predominate at most intensive care units (ICU). Maintaining the current visiting policy or switching to an open visiting hours policy continues to be a controversial study for the staff. ⋯ Staff members continue to consider the current, restricted visiting policy to be the most appropriate option for the unit. However, they accept the possibility of extending visiting hours for particular cases if beneficial for the patient.

[Non-pharmacological steps for the treatment of acute confusional syndrome in the intensive care unit].
The incidence of delirium in intensive care units is high and it has been under-diagnosed and under-treated. ⋯ It is necessary to control the ICU environment to make it more friendly, to change the routine work to promote relaxation, implement training activities and to make visiting hours flexible.

Observational Study[Interobserver reliability of the Glasgow coma scale in critically ill patients with neurological and/or neurosurgical disease].
The Glasgow coma scale (GCS) is a common tool used for neurological assessment of critically ill patients. Despite its widespread use, the GCS has some limitations, as sometimes different observers may value differently the same response. ⋯ In our cohort of patients we observed a high level of consistency in the application of both the GCS as in each of its components.
