Vasohibin 1, a clinically relevant biomarker, contributes to pre-eclampsia.
Pre-eclampsia is a leading health threat for pregnant women which is characterised by hypertension and proteinuria. The detailed mechanism is elusive and no effective therapy is available. Predictive biomarkers are needed for accurate diagnosis. Vasohibin-1 (VASH1) is an intrinsic inhibitor of angiogenesis induced by angiogenic factors in endothelial cells. This study aimed to evaluate the role of VASH1 as a useful biomarker for pre-eclampsia. ⋯ Our study suggested that VASH1 could be used as a potentially novel biomarker for pre-eclampsia and its level may positively correlate with the disease status.

Thiol-disulfide balance and total oxidant-antioxidant status in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
To assess the dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis (DTDH) and total oxidant/antioxidant status in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and to evaluate their association with HCV-RNA levels. ⋯ Our results suggest that DTDH shifts towards the DS direction because of thiol oxidation in HCV-infected patients. Furthermore, DS levels were significantly higher in patients with high HCV-RNA levels compared with patients with low HCV-RNA levels.

Evaluation of Bell's palsy in the cerebellopontine angle: An MRI study.
Evaluation of cranial nerve morphology through measuring cross-sectional area (CSA) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasing day-by-day in clinical diseases. In Bell's palsy (BP), the manifestation of the enlarged CSA of the facial nerve (FN) may be used for diagnosis. This study aims to evaluate whether there is an enlargement of the cisternal FN in BP. ⋯ Although entrapment of FN in the labyrinthine segment in BP was known, this study showed that the cisternal FN, which could be evaluated more conveniently, enlarged in the paralytic side compared with the normal side, and revealed the necessity of performing the comparison amongst the MRI studies on BP patients by a standardised measurement method. This study will also help clinicians to make a decision in the diagnosis of BP by giving a cut-off value for the CSA.

"Radiological evaluation of maxillofacial soft tissue calcifications with cone beam computed tomography and panoramic radiography".
We aimed to present the radiologic characteristics of maxillofacial soft tissue calcifications with a comparison of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic radiography (PR) findings. ⋯ Tonsilloliths have a high prevalence. The regular peripheral type had a higher risk of being a tonsillolith in PR. The peripheral/internal characteristics and the dimensions of calcifications between the two imaging modalities were in harmony. The location of calcification in PR and CBCT was important to distinguish the type of calcification.

Free Triiodothyronine to Free Thyroxine Ratio in the Differential Diagnosis of Thyrotoxicosis and Hyperthyroidism: A Retrospective Study.
Thyroid ultrasound, thyroid scintigraphy and radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) tests are helpful in the differential diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis and hyperthyroidism. In the setting where these techniques are unavailable or unusable more accessible, and cheaper techniques would be helpful. ⋯ FT3/FT4 ratio helps distinguish GD and DT. In cases of situations where RAIU/scintigraphy and TRAb cannot be studied, the FT3/FT4 ratio is a viable diagnostic tool. Cut-off values with higher specificity can be more helpful in differential diagnosis of GD.
