The diagnostic criteria for cavernous sinus invasion (CSI) by pituitary adenomas are still unsatisfactory and controversial. For this reason, the study examined the appearance of the medial wall of the cavernous sinus (MWCS) on proton-density-weighted (PDW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine its value for preoperative assessment of CSI. ⋯ PDW imaging permits adequate visualization of the MWCS and is superior to traditional diagnostic criteria for the detection of CSI, providing accurate preoperative images for intraoperative navigation.

We investigated the cerebral networks involved in execution and mental imagery of sequential movements of the left foot, both performed at slow and fast speed. Twelve volunteers were scanned with a 3T MRI during execution and imagination of a sequence of ankle movements. Overt movement execution and motor imagery shared a common network including the premotor, parietal and cingulate cortices, the striatum and the cerebellum. ⋯ We show that the selection of the neural networks underlying voluntary movement of the foot is depending on the speed strategy and is sensitive to execution versus imagery. Moreover, to the light of surprising recent findings in monkeys showing that the vermis should no longer be considered as entirely isolated from the cerebral cortex (Coffman et al., 2011 [2]), we suggest that the anterior vermis contributes to computational aspects of fast commands, whereas more lateral cerebellar superior lobe and lobule VIII would regulate patterning and sequencing of submovements in conjunction with movement rate. We also suggest that execution of overt slow movements, which strongly involves prefrontal executive cortex as during motor mental imagery, is associated with conscious mental representation of the ongoing movements.

Onyx embolization using dual-lumen balloon catheter: initial experience and technical note.
Onyx as an embolization agent for the management of vascular malformation is well established. We report our initial experience with dimethyl-sulphoxide (DMSO) compatible double lumen balloon catheters used for Onyx embolization. ⋯ Dual-lumen balloon catheter Onyx embolization is a safe and effective technique. Currently, an important tool to circumvent some of the shortcomings associated with Onyx embolization. The catheter has good navigability, the balloon has stability, tolerance, enhances penetrability. It is easy to retrieve the microcatheter. With the experience gained, and with more compliant balloon catheters available, this technique can be applied to cerebral vessels in near future.

Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy is emerging as a promising therapeutic approach for acute ischemic stroke. This study was aimed at identifying factors influencing outcomes after thrombectomy with a Solitaire stent device. ⋯ Two main prognostic factors for predicting a good clinical outcome after thrombectomy at 3 months were short time from symptom onset to recanalization and patient age.

In clinical studies, evaluating residual fiber tracts in spinal cord injuries poses serious difficulties, whereas diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can assess alterations in fiber structural integrity. For this reason, this study aimed to determine changes in the structural integrity of residual fiber tracts via fractional anisotropy (FA) variations and fiber-tracking patterns in patients with chronic traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ Specific FA variations were observed in residual fibers, suggesting that DTI may be a useful tool for evaluating residual tracts in SCI patients.
