1. To compare the basic hindlimb synergies for backward (BWD) and forward (FWD) walking, electromyograms (EMG) were recorded from selected flexor and extensor muscles of the hip, knee, and ankle joints from four cats trained to perform both forms of walking at a moderate walking speed (0.6 m/s). For each muscle, EMG measurements included burst duration, burst latencies referenced to the time of paw contact or paw off, and integrated burst amplitudes. ⋯ At the ankle joint, flexion during the E2 phase (yield) of stance was minimal or absent for BWD walking, and ankle extension during BWD stance was accompanied by a ramp increase in LG-EMG activity. At the knee joint, the yield was also small (or absent) for BWD walking, and increased VL-EMG amplitudes were associated with the increased range of knee extension for BWD stance. 5. Although the uniarticular hip extensor (anterior biceps femoris, ABF) was active during stance for both directions, the hip flexed during BWD stance and extended during FWD stance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

1. Intracellular recordings were made from 28 granule cells and 6 periglomerular cells of the rat olfactory bulb during odor stimulation and electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve layer (ONL) and lateral olfactory tract (LOT). Neurons were identified by injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or biocytin and/or intracellular response characteristics. ⋯ Periglomerular (PG) cells showed a response to ONL stimulation that was unlike that found in other olfactory bulb neurons. There was a long-duration hyperpolarization after a spike and large depolarization or burst of spikes (20-30 ms in duration). Odor stimulation produced simple bursts of action potentials, Odor stimulation produced simple bursts of action potentials, suggesting that PG cells may simply follow input from the olfactory nerve.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

This study examined the effects of the 15-lipoxygenase product of arachidonic acid metabolism, (8R,15S)-dihydroxyicosa-(5E-9,11,13Z)tetraenoic acid (8R,15S-diHETE), on mechanical thresholds and thermal responses of saphenous nerve cutaneous C-fiber nociceptors that innervate the hairy skin of the rat hindpaw. Single C-fiber mechanoheat nociceptors (C-MH) that had von Frey hair (VFH) thresholds greater than 5 g and were activated by a noxious heat stimulus were chosen for study. ⋯ The 8R,15S-diHETE-induced sensitization of C-MHs to mechanical stimuli was completely antagonized by coadministration with a stereoisomer, 8S,15S-diHETE (n = 10). 4. The mechanical threshold of C-MHs (n = 10), previously injected with the combination of 8R,15S-diHETE and 8S,15S-diHETE, was significantly reduced by a subsequent injection of PGE2. In a separate group of C-MHs (n = 7), PGE2 was co-injected with 8S,15S-diHETE, which failed to antagonize the sensitizing effect of PGE2 on mechanical threshold. 5. 8R,15S-diHETE also sensitized C-MHs (n = 9) to a thermal stimulus consisting of 37 degrees C for 5 min.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

1. Single-unit electrical activity has been recorded from 34 dorsal horn neurons in the sacral segments (S1-2) of the spinal cord in halothane-anesthetized rats. All of the neurons had cutaneous receptive fields (RFs) on the rat's tail. ⋯ We conclude that the majority of nociceptive dorsal horn neurons are subject to a net tonic descending control of their RF properties. The class 2 neurons in the deep dorsal horn appear to be a heterogeneous population, some cells being under tonic descending excitation and others under tonic descending inhibition. Class 3 cells can be separated into those located in the superficial dorsal horn, whose RF properties show very little change on spinalization, and those in the deep dorsal horn, whose RF properties change markedly on spinalization.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

1. Properties of sensory receptors with slowly conducting nerve fibers (less than 10 m/s) were studied using a rat skin-saphenous nerve in vitro preparation where receptive fields of identified single units can be isolated and superfused at the corium side with defined chemical solutions. 2. With mechanical search stimuli, 150 slowly adapting units were identified, 88% C-fibers, and the remainder, A delta-fibers. ⋯ In some experiments the calcium concentration in the superfusate of receptive fields was lowered to 0.3 mM, which induced ongoing activity in C-fibers and markedly increased the BK responses in two polymodal units tested. Increasing the calcium concentration to 3.0 mM reversed these effects. 10. After completing the BK test protocol, polymodal C-fibers were exposed to other chemicals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
