New diagnostic tools are needed to accurately detect acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) presenting with ischemic chest pain. We aimed in this study to investigate circulating miR-122, -192 and -499 expression levels in patients with AMI on top of ESRD and evaluate the potential of these miRNAs as blood-based biomarkers for AMI in patients with ESRD. ⋯ Altered expression of miR-122 and -192 may contribute in pathogenesis of ESRD. MiR-192 and -499 may serve as potential biomarkers for AMI in ESRD. Further studies are needed to correlate these miRNAs with disease progression and outcome.

The molecular mechanisms behind obesity pathogenesis remain largely undefined. Impairment in the browning process of subcutaneous tissues proposed to contribute to obesity pathogenesis. In the current study, we aimed to assess whether the expression of brown fat genes in subcutaneous tissues in obese patients is altered as compared to non-obese patients. ⋯ Our data suggested that brown and beige genes expression in abdominal subcutaneous tissues is dysregulated in patients with obesity. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of browning of subcutaneous tissues in regulating body weight and metabolism in human.

Metabolic syndrome and associated diseases are a global health problem. Detection of early metabolic modifications that may lead to metabolic syndrome would enable timely introduction of preventive lifestyle modifications. ⋯ Simple anthropometric measurements, lifestyle assessment and basic biochemical measurements can be used to identify young healthy individuals with increased risk for metabolic syndrome. These assessments can be performed at periodic check-ups of the healthy population so that timely diagnosis of B-MeS can be made. As lifestyle factors have a big influence on development or improvement of the MeS, the timely diagnosis for B-MeS would enable an early opportunity for intervention for lifestyle modification in the still healthy population, saving costs and reducing disability adjusted life years.

The aim of the study was to investigate the underlying functional network brain activity changes in patients with late monocular blindness (MB) and the relationship with their clinical features using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method. ⋯ Late monocular blindness involves brain function network dysfunction in many regions, which might indicate impairment of the visual cortex and other vision-related brain regions in the MBs.

Endothelin receptor type B (EDNRB) is a potential target gene of miR-124-3p, but the association between miR-124-3p and EDNRB has not yet been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of miR-124-3p in bladder cancer (BC) and to determine whether miR-124-3p regulates cell proliferation by targeting EDNRB. ⋯ miR-124-3p regulates the proliferation and apoptosis of BC cells by suppressing EDNRB expression.
