The studies on the pathogenesis of schizophrenia reported data indicating that abnormal immune responses might play a role in the development of schizophrenia. One of the markers of systemic inflammation is the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). In our study, the relationship between the early-onset schizophrenia, NLR, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) was investigated. ⋯ The results of the study support the multisystem inflammatory process model related to schizophrenia, which was revealed in previous studies, also in children and adolescents in the patient group (Tab. 4, Ref. 36). Aging is characterized by appetite loss and cachexia, i.e., factors that contribute to malnutrition. An inflammation marker, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), is a significant prognostic predictor of many geriatric syndromes. We aim to determine the association between NLR and malnutrition. ⋯ NLR, age, depressive symptoms, and cognitive impairment were independently associated risk factors for malnutrition. NLR may be a useful nutritional marker for evaluating the nutritional status of hospitalized geriatric patients (Tab. 4, Fig. 1, Ref. 28). Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy. There is a significant overdiagnosis of thyroid carcinomas that would never clinically manifest, with consequent unnecessary surgical treatment. The fine-needle biopsy and subsequent cytologic examination is of crucial importance in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. On the other hand, a significant portion of the results are indeterminate. ⋯ Stratification of thyroid lesions with uncertain results of fine-needle cytology using genetic markers can help to deliver more tailored medical treatment (Tab. 6, Ref. 19).

The role of vitamin D (VD) in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases (AI) is extensively studied. However, its association with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is still controversial. AIM of this study was to assess the relationship between the vitamin D status and thyroid autoimmunity in Slovak premenopausal women with newly diagnosed AITD. ⋯ Authors conclude that VD insufficiency is common in Slovak premenopausal women independently of the presence of AITD. Vitamin D insufficiency is not associated with thyroid autoimmunity in patients with early diagnosis of AITD (Tab. 3, Ref. 31). The study aimed to determine a simple diagnostic test that could predict the risk of anastomotic leakage in early postoperative period. ⋯ Despite the fact that the specificity and sensitivity of the followed parameters are low, they could serve as markers useful for early diagnosis or suspicion for leakage (Tab. 5, Fig. 3, Ref. 14).
