Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a serious acute abdominal disease. AP is often referred to as an unpredictable illness, which can take a mild to severe (fatal) course. ⋯ In this study we identify significant simple clinical and laboratory parameters that are commonly tested as part of an initial examination when admitting a patient with AP to hospital. Having identified these parameters we are able to establish a simple scoring system that is able to predict the severity of the course of AP at the moment of hospitalisation (Tab. 5, Fig. 2, Ref. 27).

To analyse the findings in a newborn (36 gestational weeks, birth weight: 4,030 grams, birth length: 48 cm, Apgar score 7/8/8 points) with prenatal suspicion of intestinal obstruction at the duodenum/jejunum level. The patient required urgent surgery on the first day of life. ⋯ The cyst anatomically communicated with the aboral section of the jejunum, but the lumen of the jejunum was functionally obturated by solid whitish masses. The histological examination confirmed the diagnostic features of a cyst of intestinal origin. The ileum and colon were patent throughout, but of smaller diameter, so a Bishop-Koop relieving anastomosis was indicated. The condition of the child at the age of 9 months was stabilised and surgical closure of the stoma was carried out (Tab. 1, Fig. 8, Ref. 21). Infective endocarditis (IE) is most often caused by bacteria. ⋯ The knowledge of the IE peculiarities during the IE progression is essential for timely diagnosis and more accurate pathology prediction (Fig. 5, Ref. 38). The aim of this study is to determine biomarkers, which may be used in order to understand the pathophysiology, the diagnosis, progression surveillance/monitoring, and treatment efficacy of high graded glial tumors. ⋯ EC and VEGF121 are biomarkers, which have the potential to be used in the diagnosis, recurrence and treatment follow-up in high graded glial tumors (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 37). Text in PDF www.elis.sk Keywords: E-Cadherin, VEGF, Survivin, Tenascin-C, Tetraspanin, glioblastoma.

Despite known risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), the research community still tries to discover new markers that would widen our diagnostic and therapeutic approach to diabetes. Therefore, research on microRNA (miR) in diabetes thrives. This study aimed to assess the utility of miR-126, miR-146a, and miR-375 as novel diagnostic markers for T2D. ⋯ The study proved a statistically significant reduction of miR-126 and miR-146a in patients with T2D (Tab. 4, Fig. 6, Ref. 51). Text in PDF www.elis.sk Keywords: microRNA, epigenetics, genomics, type 2 diabetes mellitus, miR-126, miR-146a and miR-375.
