Determination of hepatocyte growth factor at early phase of acute pancreatitis.
The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) as a new predictor of severity in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) at early phase of disease. ⋯ Serum HGF correlates with several inflammatory markers and clinical scores (Glasgow, Imrie) in patients with AP and may be considered a new promising tool in assessing the severity of acute pancreatitis.

ReviewPathophysiology advances in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
The pulmonary hypertension (PH) is the disease with still not clear pathophysiology. The possibilities of current pharmacological treatment of this disorder are unfortunately relatively small, thus the advances in searching of new agents effective in this disease are in progress. The article briefly discusses the present PH classification, its basic etiopathogenesis description and the current and potential possibilities of the pharmacological intervention.

Increased c-Fos expression in nodose ganglion in rats with electrical vagus nerve stimulation.
Central nervous system receives information from the gut and modifies food intake mainly by vagus nerves. Some our data show that long-term electrical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), which "mimics" satiety signal from gut, may cause reduction of body mass and decrease in food intake. ⋯ Increase in c-Fos expression in left nodose ganglion neurons confirms the afferent transmission of the signal (generated by MS) from periphery to the brain by the vagal nerves.

[Valenti method (PAD) as an assesment of polypropylene mesh fixing standarization in inguinal hernia repair].
The introduction of synthetic materials in hernia surgery allowed accomplishing of the improved results. Modern procedures are based on tension-free technique. This rule has been entirely applied in the innovative Valenti hernia repair method--PAD (dynamic self-adapting prosthesis). ⋯ Totally tension-free method of Valenti inguinal hernia repair provides patients with minimal pain in a postoperative period and allows a prompt return to the daily activity.

Persistent post-operative pain is defined as a pain in the location of the surgery that persist for many months or even years beyond the usual course of an acute injury and is different of that suffered preoperatively. Persistent pain can be due to long lasting nociception caused by processes such as information, chronic infection or tumor. The most important causes are neuropathic pain states due to nerve compression, entrapment or other damage. ⋯ Modern approaches including satisfactory perioperative analgesia, nerve sparing, minimally invasive techniques, and the use of a surgical approach that minimizes tissue trauma are crucial. Following inguinal hernia repair, chronic pain is less common than after laparoscopic and mesh repairs. The prompt diagnosis of acute neuropathic pain after operation is very important and management is based on extrapolation of data from the chronic neuropathic pain setting.
