Prolongation of the QT interval, i.e., measure of the time between the start of the Q wave and the end of the T wave, is a precursor to fatal cardiac arrhythmias commonly observed in individuals infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and is related to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system. We investigated the relationship between QT interval length and resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC), a core region of the brain that is involved with cardio-autonomic regulation. ⋯ A forebrain control mechanism may be implicated in the suppression of cardiovagal influence that confers risk for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in HIV+ individuals.

Electroencephalogram dynamics in children during different levels of anaesthetic depth.
Anaesthesia-induced dynamics in EEG are dependent on age and level of anaesthesia, but distinct characterisation in children is incomplete. Here we analyse EEG dynamics in children related to age and level of anaesthesia. ⋯ Different levels of anaesthesia can be identified by relative beta band power, relative delta band power and spectral edge frequency irrespective of the children's age.

This study examined the incidence, thresholds, and determinants of electrical cortical stimulation (ECS)-induced after-discharges (ADs) and seizures. ⋯ ADs and seizures during ECS brain mapping are potentially hazardous and affect its functional validity. Thus, safer method(s) for brain mapping with improved neurophysiologic validity are desirable.

To identify effects of a deviant motor drive in the autospectral power of dystonic muscles during voluntary contraction in cervical dystonia patients. ⋯ Analysis of autospectral power in isometric tasks with the head fixed is a promising approach in research and diagnostics of cervical dystonia.

Neural activity of the epileptic human brain contains low- and high-frequency oscillations in different frequency bands, some of which have been used as reliable biomarkers of the epileptogenic brain areas. However, the relationship between the low- and high-frequency oscillations in different cortical areas during the period from pre-seizure to post-seizure has not been completely clarified. ⋯ Phase-amplitude coupling can provide meaningful reference for accurate resection of epileptogenic focus and provide insight into the underlying neural dynamics of the epileptic seizure in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.
