Deterministic accessory spinal movement in functional tasks characterizes individuals with low back pain.
To apply a novel method to assess the characteristics of spinal movement in subjects with low back pain (LBP) in a functional task. ⋯ The determinism of accessory spinal movement may be a useful measure for evaluation of movement impairment in LBP and for monitoring rehabilitation effects.

Auditory cueing of gait initiation in Parkinson's disease patients with freezing of gait.
Impaired gait initiation (GI) in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) is a typical functional sign of akinesia. Failure to initiate the first step is frequently presented by patients with freezing of gait (FOG) and is often considered a sub-type of freezing. The literature on the effects of cueing of GI preparation and execution remains controversial. Our objective was to establish whether auditory cueing improves the preparation and/or execution of GI in PD patients with a history of FOG. ⋯ A failure to link step preparation and execution during GI may explain the poor first-step execution seen in PD freezers.

Effects of stimulus-driven and goal-directed attention on prepulse inhibition of the cortical responses to an auditory pulse.
Inhibition by a prepulse (prepulse inhibition, PPI) of the response to a startling acoustic pulse is modulated by attention. We sought to determine whether goal-directed and stimulus-driven attention differentially modulate (i) PPI of the N100 and P200 components of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) and (ii) the components' generators. ⋯ By using a new PPI paradigm that specifically controls attention, we demonstrated that the early stages of the gating process (as evidenced by N100) are influenced by stimulus-driven attention and that the late stages (as evidenced by P200) are influenced by goal-directed attention.

Effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on neurophysiological correlates of performance monitoring in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
To examine whether mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) would enhance attenuated amplitudes of event-related potentials (ERPs) indexing performance monitoring biomarkers of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ⋯ MBCT suggests having comparable modulation on performance monitoring ERP amplitudes as pharmacological treatments. Further study and development of MBCT as a treatment for ADHD is warranted, in addition to its potential scope for clinical applicability to broader defined externalising disorders and clinical problems associated with impairments of the prefrontal cortex.
