Multicenter clinical performance evaluation of BD Veritor™ system for rapid detection of respiratory syncytial virus.
BD Veritor™ System for Rapid Detection of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a new-generation lateral flow immunochromatographic assay for objective detection of RSV in respiratory specimens from children. ⋯ Overall, the BD Veritor™ System for the Rapid Detection of RSV performed well when compared to both viral cell culture and RT-PCR in children.

A multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of aminophylline for bronchiolitis in infants admitted to intensive care.
To determine whether aminophylline reduced the duration of respiratory support in children admitted to intensive care with bronchiolitis. ⋯ Not enough children were recruited for the study to test the hypothesis that aminophylline reduces the need for respiratory support in severe bronchiolitis. Consequently, the role of aminophylline in the management of severe bronchiolitis remains unknown.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyTransversus Abdominis Plane Block in Children: A Multicenter Safety Analysis of 1994 Cases from the PRAN (Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Network) Database.
Currently, there is not enough evidence to support the safety of the transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block when used to ameliorate postoperative pain in children. Safety concerns have been repeatedly mentioned as a major barrier to performing large randomized trials in children. The main objective of the current investigation was to determine the incidence of overall and specific complications resulting from the performance of the TAP block in children. In addition, we evaluated patterns of local anesthetic dosage selection in the same population. ⋯ The upper incidence of overall complications associated with the TAP block in children was 0.3%. More important, complications were very minor and did not require any additional interventions. In contrast, the large variability of local anesthetic dosage used can not only minimize potential analgesic benefits of the TAP block but also result in local anesthetic toxicity. Safety concerns should not be a major barrier to performing randomized trials to test the efficacy of the TAP block in children as long as appropriate local anesthetic dose regimens are selected.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudySystemic exposure to inhaled beclometasone/formoterol DPI is age and body size dependent.
Prescription of inhaled corticosteroids to children with asthma is recommended at half the nominal dose of adults in order to reduce the risk of systemic side effects. However, there is a lack of pharmacokinetic trials supporting such dose reduction regimens. Therefore, we aimed to compare the systemic exposure to the active ingredients of a fixed dose combination of beclometasone-dipropionate (BDP) and formoterol after dry powder inhaler (DPI) administration in children, adolescents and adults. ⋯ The systemic exposure to the active ingredients of BDP/formoterol administered as DPI correlates inversely with age and body size suggesting that dry powder dosage regimens should be adjusted for age and body size to avoid high systemic drug levels in children.

Multicenter StudyAcute Rehabilitation Practices in Critically Ill Children: A Multicenter Study.
To evaluate acute rehabilitation practices in pediatric critical care units across Canada. ⋯ Only half of the children receive rehabilitation while in the pediatric critical care unit, and when it occurs, therapy is primarily focused on respiratory function. Mobilization appears to be reserved for at-risk children who were muscle relaxed and sedated; however, its implementation in these patients is delayed. Future pediatric-specific research is essential to identify patients at risk and to understand treatment priorities and rehabilitation strategies to improve functional recovery in critically ill children.
