During the COVID-19 outbreak, standard methods for treating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) were used for patients presenting with ARDS. One such treatment method involves placing patients prone to improve oxygenation and reduce mortality risk. Challenges in preventing pressure injuries in patients placed prone have been reported, and no studies have explored the effects of including a certified wound and skin care nurse as part of the care team on the incidence of pressure injuries in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients with ARDS. ⋯ The inclusion of a certified wound and skin care nurse on a multiprofessional prone-positioning team significantly reduced the odds of pressure injuries developing in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Mechanisms of oxygenation responses to proning and recruitment in COVID-19 pneumonia.
This study aimed at investigating the mechanisms underlying the oxygenation response to proning and recruitment maneuvers in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. ⋯ The amount of consolidated tissue was higher in patients assessed during the third week and determined the oxygenation responses following pronation and recruitment maneuvers.

Oxygenation Defects, Ventilatory Ratio, and Mechanical Power During Severe Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Longitudinal Time Sequence Analyses in a Single-Center Retrospective Cohort.
Our understanding of pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome is based on information from studies reporting intermittent, serial respiratory data. We have analyzed a high-resolution, longitudinal dataset that incorporates measures of hypoxemia severity, metrics of lung mechanics, ventilatory ratio, and mechanical power and examined associations with survival after the onset of pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome. ⋯ Mortality after severe pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome is associated with the severity of organ dysfunction, oxygenation defects, and pulmonary metrics including dead space and theoretical mechanical energy load.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) produces a significant burden to severely ill patients affected by acute respiratory failure. The aim of this study was to describe echocardiographic findings in a series of mechanically ventilated patients with moderate and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to COVID-19. This was a single center, descriptive and cros s-sectional study of prospectively collected data. ⋯ Chronic structural abnormalities were present in 16 patients (48%), being LV hypertrophy the main finding in 11 patients (33%). The most frequent acute or dynamic finding was RV enlargement (43%) when considering all echocardiograms performed from admission to day 28 of follow-up. Other findings were: pulmonary hypertension (15%), new or dynamic left ventricle (LV) regional wall motion abnormalities (15%), new or dynamic LV global contractility deterioration (6%) and hypercontractility (12%).
