Evidence suggests that insulin resistance (IR) is an autonomous risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nevertheless, the association between estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR), a novel indicator of IR, and incident CVD and mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients without diabetes remains uncertain. ⋯ In these two large cohorts of CKD patients without DM, a higher eGDR level was associated with a decreased risk of CVD and mortality.

Soluble urokinase type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and mortality in acute pulmonary embolism.
The soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) potentially plays a role in immune-thrombosis, possibly by modulating plasmin activity or contributing to chemotaxis in a complex, poorly understood context. The role of suPAR levels in the short-term prognostic of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) has not been evaluated. ⋯ suPAR emerges as a potential biomarker for short-term mortality prediction and holds the potential for enhanced stratification in patients with acute symptomatic PE.

Inmunocompromised people have higher SARS-CoV-2 morbi-mortality and they are subsidiary to receive pre-exposure prophylaxis. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of tixagevimab/cilgavimab (Evusheld) in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections, hospitalizations and mortality in immunocompromised patients. ⋯ This study demonstrates that Evusheld reduces the SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a unique diagnostic tool that assesses the functional capacity of the heart, lungs, and peripheral oxidative system in an integrated manner. However, the clinical utility of CPET for evaluating interstitial lung disease (ILD) remains uncertain. The objective of this study was to determine the predictive value of CPET for mortality in subjects with ILD. ⋯ In conclusion, the summed score represents a useful tool for screening patients with ILD who can undergo a CPET to determine their prognosis.

Peripheral Perfusion Index in Ugandan Children With Plasmodium falciparum Severe Malaria: Secondary Analysis of Outcomes in a 2014-2017 Cohort Study.
Continuous, noninvasive tools to monitor peripheral perfusion, such as perfusion index (PI), can detect hemodynamic abnormalities and assist in the management of critically ill children hospitalized with severe malaria. In this study of hospitalized children with severe malaria, we aimed to assess whether PI correlates with clinical markers of perfusion and to determine whether combining PI with these clinical measures improves identification of children with greater odds of mortality. ⋯ In severe malaria, PI correlates with clinical complications (including shock and elevated serum lactate) and may be useful as an objective, continuous explanatory variable associated with greater odds of later in-hospital mortality.
