Comparative StudySelf-rated health and mortality in a prospective Chinese elderly cohort study in Hong Kong.
In the West, self-rated health reliably predicts death, but conceptualizations of health and cause-composition of mortality may be contextually specific. Little is known as to how self-rated health predicts death in non-Western settings. ⋯ Age-comparative self-rated health predicted death in older people from a non-Western setting although the association was less marked than in Western settings.

Ability of a mass media campaign to influence knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about sugary drinks and obesity.
We examined the impact of a mass media campaign that was designed to educate residents about the amount of added sugars in soda and other sugary drinks, as well as the health impacts of consuming such drinks. ⋯ Media campaigns about sugary drinks and obesity may be effective for raising awareness about added sugars in beverages, increasing knowledge about health problems associated with excessive sugar consumption, and prompting behavioral intentions to reduce soda and sugary drink consumption.

Observational StudyReceipt of pertussis vaccine during pregnancy across 7 Vaccine Safety Datalink sites.
In response to widespread pertussis outbreaks and infant deaths, in 2010, the California Department of Health (CDPH) and in 2011 the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) advised that the tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine be administered during pregnancy. The goals of this study were to describe Tdap coverage among pregnant women following these recommendations. ⋯ We observed substantial increases in Tdap coverage during pregnancy following CDPH and ACIP recommendations.

Comparative StudyUnderstanding occupational sitting: prevalence, correlates and moderating effects in Australian employees.
To (1) compare occupational sitting between different socio-demographic, health-related, work-related and psychosocial categories, (2) identity socio-demographic, health-related, work-related and psychosocial correlates of occupational sitting, and (3) examine the moderating effect of work-related factors in the relation between correlates and occupational sitting. ⋯ Most important contributors to occupational sitting were work-related and socio-demographic correlates. More research is needed to confirm present results.

Comparative StudyOverweight and obesity among low-income women in rural West Virginia and urban Los Angeles County.
We described the prevalence of overweight and obesity among low-income women in rural West Virginia (WV) and urban Los Angeles County (LA County). Both communities participated in the national Communities Putting Prevention to Work program during 2010-2012. In each community, we completed health assessments on adult women recruited from public-sector clinics serving low-income populations. ⋯ In LA County, for example, African American and Hispanic women were 1.4 times (95% CI=1.12, 1.81) more likely than white women to be overweight and obese. Collectively, these subpopulation health data served as an important guide for further planning of obesity prevention efforts in both communities. These efforts became a part of the subsequent Community Transformation Grants portfolio.
