Body composition radiomic features as a predictor of survival in patients with non-small cellular lung carcinoma: A multicenter retrospective study.
This study combined two novel approaches in oncology patient outcome predictions-body composition and radiomic features analysis. The aim of this study was to validate whether automatically extracted muscle and adipose tissue radiomic features could be used as a predictor of survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. ⋯ Automatically extracted muscle and adipose tissue radiomic features could be used as a predictor of survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Sarcopenia is characterized by the loss of muscle mass. Skeletal muscle can produce and secrete different molecules called myokines. Irisin and myostatin are antagonistic myokines, and to our knowledge, no studies of both myokines have been conducted in patients with disease-related malnutrition (DRM). This study aimed to investigate the role of circulating irisin and myostatin in sarcopenia in patients with DRM. ⋯ The present study reported that low levels of serum irisin were closely associated with sarcopenia in patients with DRM.

Cancer associated cachexia is characterized by the significant loss of adipose tissue, leading to devastating weight loss and muscle wasting in the majority of cancer patients. The effects and underlying mechanisms of degradation metabolites on adipocytes in cachectic patients remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a comprehensive study combining lipidomic analysis of subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue with transcriptomics data from the database to investigate the mechanisms of lipid regulation in adipocytes. ⋯ Our findings suggest that specific lipids, including PE(18:2e/18:2), may mitigate adipose tissue wasting in cachexia by modulating the expression of LPAR6 through the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. The identification of these potential targets and mechanisms provides a foundation for future investigations and therapeutic strategies to combat cachexia. By understanding the underlying lipid regulation in adipocytes, we aim to develop targeted interventions to ameliorate the devastating impact of cachexia on patient outcomes and quality of life. Nevertheless, further studies and validation are warranted to fully elucidate the intricate mechanisms involved and translate these findings into effective clinical interventions.

Adherence and impact of an oral nutritional supplement enriched in leucine, EVOO, EPA and DHA, and beta-glucans on the coverage of energy and protein requirements in patients with cancer and malnutrition: Alisenoc study.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an enhanced ONS (enriched in EPA, DHA, leucine, and beta-glucans) on the dietary intake of cancer patients. ⋯ The use of an enhanced-ONS helps meet the nutritional requirements of cancer patients, especially those who have a more compromised clinical condition, with high adherence, good tolerance, and acceptance.

Child malnutrition, comprising of undernutrition and obesity, is a global concern with severe implications for survival, leading to acute and chronic diseases that adversely affect the productivity of individuals and society. Asia shoulders the greatest burden, with 7 out of 10 undernourished children residing in the region. Despite the decline in global child stunting, particularly in Asia, its prevalence remains significant. In 2017, an estimated 151 million children under five experienced stunting, and an additional 38 million were overweight, with Africa and Asia accounting for 25% and 46% of the global figures, respectively. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the geospatial and environmental determinants of undernutrition in rural South and Southeast Asia. ⋯ This paper emphasizes the role of environmental and climatic factors on child nutrition, underscoring their significance regardless of socio-economic conditions. As the impacts of climate change continue to intensify, and agrarian societies bear the brunt, these factors will play a critical role in shaping child nutritional outcomes. Thus, amid growing climate change, nutritional security should be prioritized, considering the spatial domain and targeting climate distress areas along with other socio-economic and demographic aspects.
