The A1 allele of the TaqIA polymorphism in the dopamine D2 receptor gene (rs1800497) has been associated with obesity. However, the effect of the polymorphism on the success in weight loss and/or weight maintenance during weight-loss programs has not been evaluated thus far. ⋯ In this program, younger A1⁺ participants exhibited problems in maintaining weight loss during a weight-loss program.

Arginine (Arg) is known to possess numerous useful physiological properties and immunomodulatory effects. Th17 cells are a unique T-helper cell lineage. Regulation of Th17 cells plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders. This study investigated the effect of Arg on the exogenous advanced glycosylation end product (AGE)-induced Th17-mediated immune response. ⋯ These results suggest that in a condition of exogenous AGE administration, supplemental dietary Arg resulted in a more pronounced IL-23/IL-17 immune response, possibly by increasing NO secretion.

Recent studies have suggested that c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) plays an important role in the formation of abdominal aortic aneurysms, and that direct blockade of JNK by specific inhibitors can effectively prevent the progression of aortic aneurysms. A study has demonstrated that curcumin can suppress the development of experimental abdominal aortic aneurysms by inhibiting inflammation. We sought to investigate whether curcumin could inhibit JNK pathways and apoptosis in thoracic aortic aneurysms. ⋯ The present study indicates that the beneficial effect of curcumin on degenerative aortic aneurysms is related to the inhibition of JNK and apoptosis in the walls of thoracic aortic aneurysms.

Structural and process indicators of nutritional care: a comparison between Austrian hospitals and nursing homes.
The aim of this study was to describe and compare structural and process indicators of nutritional care in Austrian hospitals and nursing homes. ⋯ The study demonstrated that nursing homes fulfilled more structural indicators and performed nutritional screening at admission more often than hospitals. Nevertheless, the prevalence of malnutrition was high in the two settings and a substantial number of malnourished patients/residents received no nutritional intervention at all. These results show the necessity for improvements in the nutritional care in Austria, for instance, through the routine use of nutritional screening tools followed by tailored nutritional interventions in patients/residents in need.
