Case ReportsSpinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress
Type 1: A Novel Variant of IGHMBP2 Gene.Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) with respiratory distress type 1 (SMARD1) is an exceptionally rare type of SMA. It results from disintegration of alpha motor neurons of the spinal cord. Clinically, children affected with this disorder present between the age of six weeks to six months with respiratory distress and hypotonia. ⋯ Despite supportive treatment, she died at the age of 5 months in hospital. To the best of our knowledge, the variant has not been described in the literature so far. Key Words: Spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type-1 (SMARD1), Hypotonia, respiratory distress, infants.

This study aimed to determine the accuracy of neonatal lung ultrasound (LUS) in predicting the need for surfactant therapy compared with chest X-ray (CXR) in preterm infants. ⋯ · LUS is a nonhazardous bedside technique.. · LUS predicts the need for surfactant in preterm infants.. · LUS predicts the severity of RDS better than CXR..

Quality of life and functional status of patients treated with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation at 6 months.
Quality of life (QoL) outcomes of patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have been conflicting. This study reports on QoL outcomes for a broad group of ARDS patients managed with up-to-date treatment modalities. ⋯ Patients with ARDS treated with ECMO generally had good QoL outcomes, similar to outcomes reported for patients managed without ECMO. With respect to QoL, VV-EMCO represents a valid treatment modality for patients with refractory ARDS.

Case ReportsEarly neonatal respiratory distress revealing meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 17F: a case report.
Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) is the first leading cause of invasive diseases such as meningitis, bacteremia and pneumoniae in children. In this case we report an early neonatal respiratory distress revealing meningitis caused by S. pneumoniae Serotype 17F through vertical transmission, in the newborn of 3 hours of live. ⋯ This finding shows that clinical manifestations of neonatal pneumococcal meningitis may be atypical and/or misleading.

The aim of the study was to investigate whether antenatal corticosteroid therapy (ACST) could impact neurological condition, as assessed through muscular tone, of prematurely born infants. ⋯ ACST was associated with the positive neurological outcomes of prematurely born infants when assessed through their muscular tone.
